I wear the color black all-year-round, especially during fall and winter seasons. This weekend outfit was no exception. Since I knew I was going to attend a fashion show on the deck of a cruise ship, I opted to wear a maxi skirt over a maxi dress for extra warmth. I wore my go-to faux leather biker jacket and studded crossbody bag for an edgier look.

Frances’ styling tips:

  • For an illusion of separate pieces in a look, wear a top (i.e., a tee or sweater), or a skirt over your dress. The skirt should be the same length, or longer, as the dress.
  • Add texture to your outfit for more dimension, especially if your entire outfit is in the same color. For instance, a texture skirt over a basic dress, like I did in this all black look.

Fall season is upon us but I still can’t get myself to put away some of my summer wardrobe pieces, including this H&M semi-sheer maxi dress. Aside from wearing this maxi dress as is, I am able to create several looks from simply styling it in different ways, like I did here by wearing a tank over the maxi dress.

Frances’ styling tips:

  • For an illusion of separate pieces in a look, wear a top, like a tee or sweater, over your dress.
  • For a casual transitional look, wear a button-up shirt, like a chambray or plaid shirt, over your dress & tie the front ends of the shirt with all or some buttons unbuttoned.
  • For the cooler weather, wear an unzipped or unbuttoned jacket, like a denim jacket or anorak jacket, over your dress. Add a scarf to your look for those extra chilly days.
  • Pair your dress with booties to complete your fall transitional look. For a casual spring transitional look, pair your dress with lace-up or slip-on sneakers.
